A lawyer from a Winston-Salem law firm is working to secure compensation for those who were forcibly sterilized by the state after the Great Depression.
RELEASED: April 25, 2014
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
As a member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, Celeste M. Harris of Maynard and Harris Attorneys at Law, PLLC, has proactively volunteered to offer pro bono legal representation to victims of state sterilization. With her assistance, claimants have the opportunity to pursue compensation for their harm through the North Carolina Industrial Commission's Eugenics Asexualization and Sterilization Compensation Program.
According to Executive Order No. 83, for over 40 years, North Carolina forcibly sterilized approximately 7,600 people under the guidance of the North Carolina Eugenics Board program. In 2013, legislators allotted millions of dollars for one-time compensation payments to over 1,000 victims of sterilization. However, the Industrial Commission's Eugenics Compensation Program is the first state initiative to recompense those who were sterilized by force between 1929 and 1974.
Victims must file a claim for damages by June 30, 2014. Ms. Harris, a reputable litigator in the Winston-Salem area, is looking forward to advocating on behalf of those who have suffered from such egregious injustices. Moreover, the team at Maynard & Harris Attorneys at Law, PLLC, is supportive and proud of her benevolent endeavor.
